Productive Working Environment

WORK SMART Campaign

At Coway, we are committed to innovating our work process with focus on the quality of work through our WORK SMART Campaign. In order to create more efficient and rational workplace culture, we eliminated unproductive meetings and reporting process, improved repetitive tasks, and ensured more efficiency in terms of work space and schedule to keep our employees satisfied with their job.

Five Areas of WORK SMART

Work Space with Active Communication

To promote active communication and creativity between our employees, we renovated our work space adding open meeting room called “Blue Room” and remodeling the Dasom Training Room where our employees can share ideas and collaborate. We also established Good Café, Refresh Zone, Healthcare Center and break rooms to encourage communication and help take a break from work.

  • Win-win Ocean

Our employee suggestion system helps create an environment where employees can freely share their ideas and get compensated.

    Grievance Handling Channel

For more active labor-management communication, we organized a council meeting and workshop with labor representatives. “Pine Bakery” and “Chorus” are also established to listen to complaints and grievances from our employees.

Work-Life Balance

We provide a variety of programs to help our employees maintain a healthy work-life balance and create a family-friendly corporate culture. As a result of these efforts, in 2017, we were named GWP Korea’s "100 Best Companies to Work For" for 7 consecutive years and were re-certified as “Family-friendly Company” by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family.

Safe and Healthy Workplace

Occupational Safety and Health Management

At Coway, we established an occupational safety and health management system to prevent industrial disasters at our workplace. Currently, the systems for three of our manufacturing facilities (Yugu, Incheon, Pocheon) in Korea have been integrated and they are certified for OHSAS/KOSHA 18001. In 2017, we identified a total of 174 risk factors through joint safety inspections we carried out with our suppliers and improved all of them to create a safer working environment.

Occupational Safety and Health Committee Meeting

As a consultative and agreement body on health and safety issues, we organized the Occupational Safety and Health Committee on a quarterly basis, which is composed of the same number of representatives from labor and management. The committee discusses and decides on matters related to establishment of industrial disaster prevention plans, establishment and revision of safety and health management regulations, and employee training. In 2017, the committee meeting was held four times and they set the directions for the safety and health-related activities. In particular, the topics for discussion include improving our employees’ health and evaluating working environment such as air quality.

Safety and Health Activities

We are committed to making our workplace safe and healthy and keeping safety as our top priority through various activities. To this end, we carry out voluntary safety inspections on our production facilities twice a month through “Haengbok Jikimi (Happiness Keeper)” consisting of site supervisors and representatives of workers and engage in prevention and improvement activities such as environmental improvement campaign. In 2017, we made improvement on 75 issues out of 80 that we identified through inspections while we are making progress on the remaining issues. In addition, we are raising our employees’ awareness of safety by distributing an emergency response manual on natural disasters such as earthquakes and fire.

Business Case

Improvement of Indoor Air Quality in Production Sites

Since 2017, we have been committed to improving the indoor air quality at our production sites. Air quality sensors are installed on every production line to monitor and manage VOCs, carbon dioxide, and particulate matter in real time. Meanwhile, we use air purifiers and a thermal exchange ventilation system to reduce particulate matter. As a result, the CO2 emissions of the welding process was reduced by 25% (779 → 585 PPM) and the particulate matter by 55% (207 → 92.7 μg/㎥).
